Touchstones and Threads of Change
is a collection of short stories and
poetry, many of which originally appeared in literary magazines and
have won awards. Meet Loretta
Whitehawk, the first young maiden invited into her tribe's inner
circle. Meet a feisty elderly survivor of Katrina, a "walkin'
preacher," and a host of southern voices brought to life in these
pages, a cast of strong, determined characters who choose to shape
their own destinies, speak their minds. Dixon Hearne knows the
South: its people, their voices, their culture, and their
tribulations. And therein lies his story-telling gift -- the
exceptional ability to transform local, sometimes seemingly petty
squabbles into observations on the universal human condition and the
invariable opportunities for redemption. A very enjoyable afternoon
read! |

What Readers Have to Say... |
|
“Dixon Hearne has been publishing poems
for some time. Now for the first time, his poetry meets
short fiction in a literary tribute. Hearne’s poignant
short stories are enhanced by the rich words of poetry
interwoven throughout the book.
Touchstones
and Threads of Change
is an inspiration to all who have put pen to word or
just love to read.”

“A touchstone may appear at first
as an inanimate object. In reality, its black and ochre
artistry contains dramatic swirls which connect the
threads of history to the people it has served. Meet
Loretta Whitehawk, the first young maiden invited into
her tribe’s inner circle, whose words connect
generations past and present with a voice that sounds
like spirits. Meet a feisty elderly survivor of Katrina,
a walkin’ preacher, and a host of southern voices
brought to life within these pages. Meet a cast of
strong, determined characters who choose to shape their
own destinies, speak their minds.
And finally, it is my privilege to
introduce the author, Dixon Hearne. His collection is a
clarion call in the distance. It summons us to heed the
touchstones and threads that connect all brothers and
sisters in our mutual quest to understand the circles,
spirits, swirls and remnants of life and literature.”

“This book is an incredible treasure.
Every page of Hearne’s literary collection echoes the
culture and nuances of the American Indian, as well as
Hearne’s memoirs, poems, and short stories reflecting
his life experience in the Deep South. A very enjoyable
afternoon read!”

| About the
Author... |
|
Dixon Hearne,
Ph.D., teaches and writes in southern California. His
writing, however, draws greatly from rich images in his
daily life growing up along the river banks and levees
of West Monroe, Louisiana. After graduating from
University of St. Thomas in Houston, he moved to Los
Angeles, where he earned his M.A. in Education from
Pepperdine University, and later a Ph.D. from Claremont
Graduate University. During his early career, he taught
English to high school students, eventually gravitating
toward the field of learning disabilities – hoping to
help young readers acquire the skills to unlock doors to
wonderful literature. Later, he moved to the university,
where he has contributed a respectable body of research
and writing to the field of Education.
Dixon wrote his first short story in 2001, which
resulted in both an Editors’ Choice award and
encouragement to pursue fiction writing as a new hobby.
Since that time, he has published over fifty short
stories in magazines and literary journals, many of
which have earned writing awards. His stories can be
found in recent issues of Mature Living, The
Louisiana Review, Cream City Review, Roanoke Review,
Louisiana Literature, and several anthologies,
including Writing on Walls II, That Thing You Do,
and Teacakes and Afternoon Tales: New Stories from
Mississippi. New work is also forthcoming in
Humor for the Boomer’s Heart and
Rocking Chair Reader: Christmas
Traditions.
