Wes Dannreuther’s Gulf Coast novel begins with Jimmy O’Connor, a sixteen year old loner, staring out from shore to Horn Island—an island he’s sure is filled with beauty, possibility, and mystery, though he’s sure it can’t be more mysterious than a secret he’s just discovered about his long-deceased father. To Jimmy the secret means his mother has failed to tell him everything about his father, thus setting Jimmy off to find the truth about his father’s and, consequently, his own, identity. Trekking through the small coastal town of Pascagoula, Jimmy slowly begins to put together pieces of his father’s life and, before he knows it, is forced to make a decision that is sure to be life-changing. The mysteries and allure of Horn Island, the same island where the now-famous artist Walter Anderson spent most of the last eighteen, nearly-mythic, years of his life, serve as a backdrop for Jimmy’s quest for truth and in the end, embody all of his dreams, as well as his possibility, in this truly compelling coming of age story.
