Pet Peeve
By Maggie Harmanski

My hair is like a child
whose age is nine.
I just can't get,
this stuff to mind.
I've tried mousse,
I've tried gel
Nothing works!!!
Can't you tell?
Just like a lizard,
whose colors change.
Looking in the mirror,
It's never the same.
I'd shave my head
... but what for?
As fast as time,
I'd have twice more.
My hair is a time bomb,
waiting to explode.

What can I do??

What Mid Life Really Means
By Carrie Hodges

I heard Roy Rogers died today
my first hero
my larger-than-life man and his horse.
I see myself at three
guns and holsters on
red hat, fringed red vest, and cowboy boots
Trigger's mane twined in my hand,
the smell of dust and the road in my mouth
gallooping galloping away away
to shoot the villain and win the day.
I must have rocked a million miles.
Always I was Roy
never Dale,
knowing even then who got top billing.
Sometimes
when I rode my stick horse
I was Roy and Trigger,
a simple turn of mind then
to be two things at once--
a rhetorical question I couldn't know to ask.
The world seemed safe
knowing Roy was there
(even after Trigger passed on to glory).
Somehow
somehow I thought Roy could stay,
captured in time as well as celluloid,
my hero
smiling singing victorious.

Happy trails, Roy
