The Tiger
(First Place)
By Cassandra Hill
Biloxi, MS

It is night.
The moon hangs low
The tiger wakes up.
It is time to go.

Time to hunt.
Time to feed.

The tiger eats the deer,
The deer eat the seed.

It’s the circle of life.
It’s the way things are.

The tiger slinks through the grass.
He doesn’t have to go far

Before he sees a buck,
Beside a frail doe.

The tiger waits in the grass.
He crouches low.

The unsuspecting deer
Don’t see death in the grass.

The tiger roars a roar
That could shatter glass!

He leaps through the air!
Soaring like a bird!

Flying towards the doe,
At a speed that is absurd!

The buck bounds away.
He knows he can’t save his doe.

The doe screams.
It is the end for her.

The tiger is full.

He goes back to his den.

The Life of a Tear
(Second Place)
By David Nation
Pascagoula, MS

The very best feeling
expresses itself in warmth;
the loving touch
that gives itself to love
as the life of a bitter tear.
I would love
to be born in your eyes,
live upon your silken cheeks,
And die – on  your soft, glistening lips

My Uncle J Lives
in the Suburbs of Houston TX
(Honorable Mention)
By Joshua Griffin
Biloxi, MS

My cousin, Christian,
Younger than I,
Unpacked from our trip.
New area,
Crazy people
Living in the neighborhood,
Especially hobos.
Just as I went outside
Lizards were everywhere;
In the bushes, on the walls.
Villagers wouldn't like staying here;
Except my cousin, Christian.
So many lizards!
Inside were my
New clothes
That I got from the Galleria mall:
Hat, shorts, and a shirt;
Everything but some shoes.
Same old shoes for me
Unless I buy some more.
But I probably need the money for something Unusual.
Riding down the water slide,
Bumped my head.
Spinning around,
Out of control.
Fun!
Hysterical!
Oops, almost drowned.
Unable to walk,
Splashtown Waterpark, good-bye.
Texas is great!
Off to another adventure.
Next stop, the movies.
Tomorrow we leave, but
X marks the spot.
